Koori on the East Coast

living on the east coast

is disenfranchising
at best

they say I identify
for the benefits –
the same one’s they get
only under a different name

but why would I tick a box
when all I receive in return
are insults hurled my way

living on the east coast

the lighter your skin
the less your voice matters

the more you talk like a white
the less you are heard

physical perceptions of
the black fella way
are deemed more true
more right

but I’m not white
and I’m not right

living on the east coast

white fellas tell me
more often than not
that I’m an impostor

they strip away
my identity
my history
piece by piece
peeling away the layers
until they are left with nothing but a

blank

white

canvas.
